WordPress is an excellent blogging platform. One of its nice features is that it comes with many default settings and is ready to be published right out of the box. But that feature becomes an issue if you don’t modify default pages and post before you make your blog public.
For instance, when you install WordPress, it creates a default “About Page” with following text .
“This is an example of a WordPress page, you could edit this to put information about yourself or your site so readers know where you are coming from. You can create as many pages like this one or sub-pages as you like and manage all of your content inside of WordPress.”
This is a good starting point but many bloggers in their haste forget to modify this page. As a result the readers, when they this visit a blogger’s ‘About Page’ to learn about the blogger, will not only be disappointed that they did not find any useful information about the person they are trying to connect with, they will also think of the blogger as careless individual and may leave the blog never to return.
Remember as a blogger you have only few seconds to impress your visitors and connect with them. The first impression they get from your blog will determine if they become your loyal readers.
Many first time readers usually want to know more about you and the best place to share information about yourself is your “About Page”. After installing WordPress you should immediately edit the default ‘About Page’.
How to Edit About Page in WordPress
Editing pages in WordPress is easy and the process is similar to editing posts.
To edit your default ‘About Page’ follow these steps.
- Log on to your WordPress Admin dashboard.
- Click on ‘Pages’ link.
- Hover your mouse over About link, and then click on ‘Edit’ link.
- In the edit window you can change the content of the page.
- Click Save to save your changes.
Editing a page in WordPress is easy. But what should you put in your About page. Obviously you need to share some information about you with your readers.
Some items to consider include
- Who you are? You professional experience/background.
- How is your experience and background relevant to your blog topic?
- You blogging goals, why are you blogging?
- What value does your blog offer to the readers?
- You contact information.
- A link to your RSS feed.
A brief yet informative About page will help you to connect with your readers. They will have a better idea about you. The knowledge that they are not visiting a blog by an anonymous writer instills a certain level of trust in the readers which in turn makes them your loyal audience.
